Why Help The Yawanawa?

With two major missionary invasions on their land throughout history, their culture was almost completely wiped out. Since kicking the missionaries off their land, the Yawanawa have been passionately working to reestablish their culture. They have come a long way since, but with this ever merging world, it is more important than ever to have a space where the youth can be taught their ancient ways of life.

The Yawanawa understand their children are the future leaders of their tribe and if they don't grow up understanding the importance of their home - the Amazon Rainforest - a lot of destruction could take place in the coming years.

At The School of Tradition, Yawanawa children learn math, history, reading and writing, in addition to the ancient wisdoms, and rituals of their people. Here they learn what it means to be conscious stewards and guardians of this great and important forest.

With the money we raise for this school we also fund 1,000 fruit trees to be planted near the school. The Yawanawa understand the children are the future leaders of their villages.

This school is a call to action to ensure the Amazon Rainforest and their ancient culture is alive for many generations to come.

The project is being lead by Julia Kenemeni Yawanawa, the director of the School of Traditions and founder of the Yawanawa Women’s Association. She is leading the whole build out of the school, hiring many of the Yawanawa men as well as more experienced sawyers and carpenters.

All money will be donated to their non-profit, the Yawanawa Association, and directly managed by Julia.
